new year:new scrap rules

So. the album challenge.

Around 6 months ago, I bought some coupons for photo books. Three coupons actually. For 100 page books. In A4 format. Gave myself a pat on the back for being so forward-thinking. Knowing that I had heaps of time to get all those pages I'd been doing together, and print them.

Then I realised, as the new year dawned, that the coupons expire on the 22nd January. This year. And I had a little moment. I quickly panicked and looked through my folders. What I (repeatedly) found prompted me to make some new scrapping rules for myself (after I repeatedly hit my forehead with my mouse).

1. Put the date.on.every.page.

2. Journal. Everything. Even just a little bit, to say where the pictures were taken, or what we were doing.

3. Heavily embellished, layered pages are not what I want for my albums. I love making these kind of pages- lurve the pretty- but it often distracts me from my main aim of documenting. Also, turns out my family aren't so interested in looking at those either. Hubby tells me he prefers simple pages, where the photos are the star. Yes, he said that.

4. Keep a consistency in design. And in keeping with the simple thing, I'm going to stick with plain backgrounds, perhaps a little solid colour or print for pop, and one or two embellishments. I don't care that I can hear you yawning. In years to come, I want my eyes to wander through my albums and be overtaken with memories, not think wow, chevron was so in back in 2011. Document in double pages as much as possible.

5. Document as I go. I'd like to say I'll get my album pages done at the end of each month. Considering however, that I am currently staring down the barrel of three years of pages, I know that I'm kidding myself there. Although, you never know!

So there we have it. Now, I need to stop belting myself in the head with the keyboard, and get back to photoshop. Oh, before I go, want to see some pages, following the golden rules?

Something a little magic happens when Peppermint (one little bird) gets her design on with Ms Paislee Press. Chuck in Traci Murphy, and we have this gorgeous little lovechild: Generations. Such a beautiful kit, in classy neutrals, for your family and heritage photos.

It was perfect for recording a get-together of my family:

What a good-looking bunch (never mind the reel of 24 awkwards. we are getting better). That's my Poppi, on the right, holding my little girl. I can hear him singing "Pop goes the weasel". He had a stroke yesterday.

The work on the album extravaganza continues!

I used ViVa's new kit to document the Blessingway I had to prepare for my little one's birth, back in May last year:

I am loving streamlined, magazine style documenting right now. Probably because I am super focused on getting the documenting done for some albums before the end of the month- more on that later.

Yep, it sure is. Epic. The collaborative work of One Little Bird Designs, Paislee Press Designs and Biograffiti.

And I was slow in cracking this open, intimidated by the awesomeness. I ended up with a two-pager (don't think I've done one of those before).

I like how it looks side-by-side! And, hello, chevron! You should get this kit. The stitches and photo overlay were dug up from my stash.

I am loving the process of scrapping my retro photos. This is me in Year 1. I really think I should start wearing my hair like this again! Whenever I slide an old photo onto my page, I get the urge to journal, stream-of-consciousness style. Sometimes I write things the front of my brain had forgotten- like the smell of Gestetner stencils at school back in the day. Remember that, anyone?

I used the new kit from One Little Bird, called Westover. Perfect for celebrating your geeky self in a stylish manner. Nice one, Peppermint!

you couldn't possibly have missed the tragedy of the oil spill in the gulf. you couldn't possibly have not been touched by the utter loss and destruction of a beautiful natural resource. you couldn't possibly be accepting this kind of event as the price we have to pay. even down here in australia, many miles away, we have been watching this story unfold in frustration, disbelief and anger. but it is vital that we hang on to the hope that the area affected can recover, and that we humans will learn the vital lesson of living harmoniously with the world, respectfully. sara gleason has gathered together her scrapping mates to create this beautiful kit, with a message of hope, love and peace. go buy it.

well, rather appropriate that i should be showing off a fab mini called 'tickled pink', because quite frankly, i am! cori gammon at the lilypad accepted me onto her creative team last week, so i have been excitedly scrapping with her gorgeous, whimsical goodies. tickled pink was so easy to scrap with- fun prints and fab elements. just yum.
i was inspired by the fun of this kit to make this page- featuring a photo where my hubby totally photobombed me. i also used a template from amy martin and journal prompt from Log Your Memory.

i am so excited! i entered last weeks photography contest at vanilla bees, focused on bokeh. i didn't know what that was, so i read up a bit. i entered a pic of my beautiful bubba with some light coming through a wicker basket lid in the background (you can see it in my flickr pic stream). and it was chosen as the winner. crazy happy. and if you haven't checked out vanilla bees yet, you should. their photography, cooking, scrapping and photo processing contests rock.

well the fabulous peppermint (one little bird) has packed up her bongos and moved to a new store. surely you heard the buzz, did you guess which store is her new home? it's oscraps! so much gorgeous stuff in one store, you won't know what to do with yourself! now, here is a new mini-ish kit just fresh in the oscraps store, it's a little retro and a lot bright and sunny. and it forms part of the 25 days of templates: summer edition class with Tiffany Tillman.
i got to play with a couple of sample templates from the class, and they are quality.

log your memory. logbook challenge week 14

i am so enjoying running along with the challenges in my LYM logbook. i like being able to sit down and focus for a little time on something that is important in my life right now. week 14's challenge was no exception, here's the layout i created with it:

now of course i can't tell you the exact prompts for this challenge- you would need to take a look at the book yourself for that, but i was grateful for the opportunity to reflect on our recent move and the changes to our lifestyle that has brought. and i was super chuffed to have this layout appear on the GSO blog- thanks lynette for choosing it! the design of the layout was lifted from a layout by mrshobbes.

hmmm. i just had to go outside and check that there were not in fact pigs flying in the sky. because i didn't think this week would get any better scrapping-wise (it's been pretty good family wise too, thanks for asking). and then i woke up to a lovely email from joyce paul inviting me to join her creative team. hello? so i have been playing with joyce's latest kit, a collab with polly & rufus designs. i had already bought it because it is just so beautiful, and the colours will really suit the landscape around my home.

aaah, all has been revealed! one little bird will be guest designer at Scrapbookgraphics, and here is the kit that you need to go and check out. because it's cool. also if you head over to Scrapbookgraphics, you can read Peppermint's answers to a barrage of questions from some of her crazy fans. it is really not funny or witty at all.

good heavens. am i excited or what? i got the most awesome email the other day from Peppermint...otherwise known as one little bird. i applied for her creative team and she actually let me in. i think she made a mistake but i'm going to pretend i know what i'm doing and see how it goes. she doesn't know this, and don't tell her, but Peppermint was my first scrapping crush. i was so in love with her style and mad skills when i first started scrapping, and one day she left a comment on one of my layouts and i died! so you can imagine how thrilled and overwhelmed i am. if you love one little bird stuff like i do, go check out Peppermint's blog, where she is giving away her upcoming kit. check out the preview:

aaah, gabs. she's done it again. the queen of unique has just put these fabbo element packs in her shop. insanely cool, and totally original, i am in love with these transparency frames and can't stop using them. really, i'm going into rehab tomorrow. check em out:

my girls vivie and vanessa have rocked out yet another gorgeous kit. feeling springy yet? well i'm not because i live in the southern hemisphere, and well, quite frankly it's still pretty summery where i am. but it is nice to be organised. and this kit will do all sorts of layouts cause it's good. i love love love the gorgeous colours in this one!

well. my p365 has hit a dismal standstill. am i the only one running out of puff already? i have become lazy with taking photos, finding that some days i take stacks of photos that i love, then i'll have three days in a row where i wouldn't even know where the camera is...but i am going great guns with my journalling, mainly thanks to my Log Your Memory 2010 Logbook.

so, i'm changing tack. i've come up with a new plan. i am going to swing into a weekly scrapping scenario, choosing my four favourite photos from the week, and relaying any journalling i've done in my logbook, editing where i need to. i am going to keep a consitent colour theme too, because that's how i roll. i've picked Noticed, a collab between Three Paper Peonies and Monalisasmiles. i've been stalking jaime (3PP) for ages now, and i'm a big fan of monalisa smiles gorgeousness since hanging out at Mscraps. this kit is yumminess. here's the first page i did (note my brilliant attention to chronological detail):

and i thought, why not make myself some templates, to make it even easier? whammo. here is my first fab four template:
